"At Sturgeon Electric, our aim was simple: to connect deeply with our community and learn how we can elevate our electrical construction services and customer partnerships. Our engagement board sparked conversations and piqued curiosity among CAHED attendees.
It was exciting to hear from attendees about the construction challenges they are faced with, industry trends, various uses of technology, and what inspires their work. We believe shared understanding makes for stronger partnerships, helps us find more ways to provide construction solutions, and drives successful project results."

An Activation: Engagement Walls
Conferences buzz with activity: keynote speeches, breakout sessions, and networking abound. Engagement Walls serve as a dynamic centerpiece, weaving together these diverse elements to connect ideas into a cohesive visual narrative. Visitors contribute insights, shaping a collective map of ideas and interactions and seeing their ideas hand drawn in a visual note.
Typically, Engagement Walls feature thought-provoking prompts, with a graphic recorder capturing real-time responses.
The value of Engagement Walls is manifold:
-
Facilitating Idea Exchange: They compile attendees' thoughts and "ah-ha" moments into a single visual collage, fostering idea sharing.
-
Deepening Understanding: By viewing others' contributions or interacting with augmented reality content, participants gain deeper insights into event topics.
-
Creating Interactive Spaces: Engagement Walls transform spaces, encouraging active participation and on-the-spot learning.
To ensure an effective Engagement Wall experience, several best practices should be considered:
-
Timing: Allow ample breathing room within the event schedule for attendees to engage with the wall and reflect on discussions.
-
Incentivization: Encourage participation through reminders, designated activities, or inventive schemes like stamp collections.
-
Tailored Interaction: Customize the wall's format to suit the audience and event goals.
-
Thoughtful Prompts: Craft concise, stimulating questions to elicit meaningful responses and avoid generic inquiries.
-
Considerations of Size and Space: Strike a balance between impressiveness and practicality to ensure the wall is both eye-catching and accessible.
-
Post-Event Considerations: Plan for displaying or transporting the wall afterward, whether through easily rolled paper or foldable foam board panels.
-
Selecting the Right Recorder: Choose a graphic recorder who is adept at drawing out ideas and engaging with attendees, potentially considering multiple recorders for larger events or specialized content.
By adhering to these guidelines, Engagement Walls can effectively enhance events, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among participants.

People love to share photos on socials with the final creation, setting your company and session apart from anything else they've ever participated in before.
Don't forget to follow up with everyone who helped create the collective masterpiece, solidifying the stickiness of the conference.

Engagement Wall, Live Visual Note-taking Critical Success Factors
A lot of hard work goes into creating a successful large scale interactive display. I give you my tips and tricks for a successful activation in my LinkedIn post here

✏️ Prep logos and assets ahead of time. This is a BIG A$$ wall and you only have a few hours to fill it. I trace logos using my at-home projector and either fly with it or, once in a great while when I get to work in my town, affix it to the display at home ahead of time.

🖨️ I created PowerPoint slides and printed out 1. The instructions for the activity 2. The prompt questions that I laid out on a table with stickies and pens to answer each question and put on the display. It is very useful to have a print out of the numbered questions in addition to having them on the board. This way, people can write their answers numbered.
🥕 Have an incentivization mechanism. For this hashtag#activation you were entered into a drawing for a power bank if you participated with one raffle ticket 🎟️ . You got a second raffle ticket 🎟️ if you let us take your Polaroid and put it on the powerline 🌄
👯 Have a buddy. This can be hard to do, but ensure that the client can give you a helper. It is very challenging to solicit information, explain the incentivization, and draw feedback at the same time. I was very lucky to have an overqualified LPEA board member to help field participants.

✏️ Draw a footer. You can't lay on your stomach on the floor to draw (not comfortably anyway) so I pre-create relevant imagery ahead of time as a footer taking up plenty of space where you cannot capture feedback live comfortably. I tape the display together and put it on a table. I do my homework to ensure that relevant imagery is created. This meeting had conversations on regional grids/transmission lines, hydro, battery storage, and wind. I knew the basic topics ahead of time and drew those as the footer.
✏️ Draw the title and prompt questions ahead of time (up high where you cannot comfortably reach without a ladder).

✏️ Write up a useful summary of the output for the client. They can easily communicate out what the findings are with my translation both visually and in writing.
